Ki Aikido gradings have two parts, first there is the ki grade and then there is the aikido grade. The ki grades are a test of your ki development. The aikido grades are a test of your aikido techniques. Gradings are structured thus:
Ki Grade |
Aikido Grade |
Minimum Required Practice |
Shokyu |
4 months after starting |
|
5th Kyu (yellow belt) |
4 months after Shokyu |
|
4th Kyu (orange belt) |
4 months after 5th kyu |
|
Chukyu |
4 months after 4th kyu |
|
3rd Kyu (green belt) |
4 months after Chukyu |
|
2nd Kyu (blue belt) |
4 months after 3rd kyu |
|
Jokyu |
4 months after 2nd kyu |
|
1st Kyu (brown belt) |
4 months after Jokyu |
|
Shoden |
8 months after 1st kyu |
|
Shodan (1st Dan black belt) |
8 months after Shoden |
You can see that the ki grades and aikido grades almost alternate, you cannot take an aikido grade without having taken the relevant ki grade. The above are minimum time periods assuming you practice twice weekly for about 2 hours each time, in fact even if you practice everyday they are the minimum times. Obviously if you can only practice once a week for an hour or so it could (will) take much longer.
